Local Attractions

Here, you can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, explore glorious beaches, impressive mountains, fertile valleys and steep gorges, and become part of the island’s rich gastronomic culture.

As the largest of the Greek Islands, it’s no surprise Crete’s got a lot going on. And that's certainly the case here on the eastern side, where adventure-ready mountains sit alongside neon-lit clubs, sleepy towns and ancient Minoan treasures. Mega town Malia is where the party happens, Stalis is the place to while away the days on a sandy beach and Rethymnon has a gorgeous harbour and Old Town to explore. Then there’s Elounda where things get a bit more swanky.

There is so much to discover, Crete’s most famous historical attraction is the Palace of Knossos, the grand capital of Minoan Crete, located 5km south of Iraklio. Relax on the Elafonisi beach considered by many to be the best beach in Crete. A beach to rival Elafonisi, Balos Lagoon is equally paradisiacal and is one of Crete’s most famous images. Hike through the Samaria Gorge in the national park. The mountains of Crete offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and trekking. To fully understand the oldest civilisation in Europe, look no further than Heraklion’s outstanding archaeological museum. A visit to Aquaworld Aquarium is one of the best things to do in Crete with kids. Water City in Anopolis is a huge water park with slides and pools for all ages. Toddlers and babies will love the mini slides and water playground. Older kids and teenagers will love the thrilling water slides and lazy river.
